Valldemossa is today very much as it was many years ago with its wonderful monastery (Carrthusian) were monks had been since 1400 the 1830s the Spanish government confiscated monasteries, and the historic Mallorca estate was sold to private owners, who have since hosted some prominent guests.

These have included the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin and the French writer and pioneering feminist George Sand who lived there from december 1838 to february 1839 and written is book  'A Winter in Majorca. Nowadays the monastery is one of the most visited building on the island after the cathedral in Palma and has become increasingly geared towards tourists in recent years.

Valldemssa is also famous for some of its famous residents Catherine Zeta Jones and husband Michael Douglas  have bought a house near to the village, Michael Douglas opened the Costa Nord centre here you can hear his narration of an audiovisual history of Majorca.

One of the most grandiose and impressive hotels in this area is the hotel Valldemossa  and in the near village of Diea is the luxury hotel la residencia.both hotels are visited may the rich and famous.
